How to Use This Final Grade Calculator

  1. Enter your current grade as a percentage (e.g. 85 for an 85%).
  2. Enter your desired grade โ€” the final course grade you are aiming for.
  3. Enter the exam weight โ€” what percentage of your total grade the final is worth.
  4. Click Calculate and the tool instantly shows the minimum score you need on the final.

How It Works

The calculator uses a simple weighted-average formula:

Required Score = ( Desired Grade โˆ’ Current Grade ร— (1 โˆ’ Exam Weight) ) รท Exam Weight

Example: Current grade 85%, desired 90%, final worth 30% โ†’ (90 โˆ’ 85 ร— 0.7) รท 0.3 = 101.7%. Since that exceeds 100%, the 90% target is out of reach without extra credit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?

Use the formula above. You can also use this calculator โ€” enter your current grade, desired grade, and final exam weight, and it does the math for you instantly.

What if the required score is over 100%?

That means your desired grade is mathematically out of reach given your current grade and the exam weight โ€” unless your teacher offers extra credit or curves the exam.

What does exam weight mean?

Exam weight is the percentage of your final course grade that comes from the final exam. If the final is worth 30% of your grade, everything before it counts for the remaining 70%.

Is this calculator free and private?

Yes. It is completely free, requires no sign-up, and all calculations happen in your browser โ€” nothing you type is uploaded or stored.

What if my school uses weighted grades or points?

This calculator works for the common percentage-weight model. If your class uses a points system, convert each item to a percentage of the total points first, then use the same inputs.
